Sri Dattatreya
Immortal incarnation — the primordial Avadhoota Guru
Sri Datta is a great Avadhoota Guru. He is the one residing in all the beings and is all pervasive. Guru symbolizes self knowledge. Sri Dattatreya is the immortal incarnation in the form of the primordial Guru. Datta is the one, who was pleased by the penance of Atri and Anasooya and gave himself to them, in the days of yore. Datta is that blissful form, who gives himself away to those engaged in penance.
Datta is Smartrugami, means the one who is pleased by sheer remembrance and he is fulfilling the desires of the devotees even today. The speciality of Datta’s incarnation itself is to redeem those who take refuge in him and emancipate them by ridding them from the cycle of birth and death. That is the reason the devotees are having the vision of Datta in the form of an infant, a feminine, a crazy person, an old person, a sage and many other different forms. Dattatreya is that splendid principle which is shining everywhere, always and in everything. While meditating on the Guru, in the temple of the heart, it is better to feel that all the forms are of Datta alone.
Audumbara, Digambara & worship at Dodderi
It is said that the fig tree is the residing place of Datta. That is why circumambulating the fig tree, chanting “ Digambara Digambara Sripada Vallabha Digambara ” is the best form of service to Datta. Digambara means the all pervasive, who has the directions themselves as the clothing. In Sri Kshetra Dodderi ashram which has the beautiful idol of Sridatta and the fascinating Audumbara-fig tree, daily pooja of Sri Datta, bhajans, palanquin procession of Sri Dattatreya every Thursday, daily Annadana and many more such activities have been going on regularly.
